In this post, I’ll share 3 tips to score more penalty kicks.
Let’s get started!
Tip #1: Create a Routine
Creating a routine is a great way to handle the stress/pressure associated with penalty kicks.
Some simple routines could be:
Breathe deep, slow breaths. This will also help take your heart rate down.
Place the ball on the penalty spot the same way every time.
Look at the ball instead of the goalie while you are waiting for the whistle to blow.
It doesn't really matter what the routine is.
The only thing that matters is to find what works for you.
Tip #2: Practice Your Routine
Once you find a routine, make sure that you practice it a lot.
It will only be effective if you know it so well that you can do it in your sleep.
I would also try to practice your routine in a variety of scenarios.
This will help you develop the confidence to score a penalty kick in any setting.
The following is a great starting point:
Practice taking penalty kicks alone with no keeper.
Practice taking penalty kicks with a keeper.
Practice shooting in all directions of the goal.
Practice with a crowd to create a game-like setting.
If you practice your routine in each one of these settings, you will be more prepared to score in the game.
Look for other ways to practice taking penalty kicks until you are very comfortable in front of the net.
Tip #3: Wait a Few Seconds After the Whistle
Penalty kicks are just as stressful for the goalie as they are for you.
Wait a few seconds after the whistle.
This will throw off the goalie and make it harder for them guess the direction of your kick.
Penalty kicks can be a challenge, but they can also be a great opportunity!
Practice these tips and you will score more PK's in the future.
